Actually the building on the left is the Staatsoper - the State Opera House. The small dome in the middle is a church, though - the Catholic Hedwigskathedrale. The building on the right is the Humbuldt University. The most interesting spot is the one behind the cars, though. The place surrounded by these buildings is today August-Bebel-Platz (named after a German Social Democrat politician). This is where the nazis burned the books in 1933 (?). It has an impressive monument in the ground now - a large, white, empty underground library.
